Frequently Asked Questions

How does Hillism find hills?

We analyse road and path data from OpenStreetMap combined with NASA's SRTM 30-metre elevation data to detect hill climbs on mapped roads and trails. The algorithm identifies continuous uphill segments and calculates grades, distances, and elevation profiles.

Why can't I see any hills in my area?

Hills are detected from OpenStreetMap data. If your area has limited road coverage in OSM, fewer hills may appear. You can also try zooming out or adjusting the grade filters to include gentler hills.

Why does the app need my location?

Location access is optional. It's used only to centre the map on your current position so you can find nearby hills quickly. Your location is never stored or tracked.
